What inspires you from WFSU Public Media? Here's this week's Voices That Inspire. Regie Ellis, Associate Professor of History at Florida and in University, and Assistant Dean in the School of Graduate Studies, Research and Continuing Education. The concept of a village raised in a child, I was raised by a village on schools, I was raised on schools, I was raised by a village on schools, and members of the Department of History, Political Science, Public Administration, I have Florida and in University raised me. And so I definitely did not get where I am today by myself. The love and the passion that I have for Florida and in University, it's not just for a four year or five year academic journey, it really is a lifetime journey. These individuals raised me from a boy to a man. As Americans, we should, from my assessment, want to teach and understand all aspects of history. I understood how impactful seeing myself in history was for me as an individual to understand that, slavery was a part of my experience. And the role that black people played in America, and I think that if we leave those aspects out, we don't understand how individuals push for good. Me and a colleague talks about all the time, you talk I care it from Wigham, Georgia, with about 500 individuals, has a PhD. And I will say perhaps the only reason that I have a PhD is because I had access to higher education, but then the passion for history and understanding that there were individuals before me who looked like me, walked like me, talked like me, that had the ability to do it, inspired me to do it. And that's from my assessment, the impact of understanding history. I'm Regie Ellis, a associate professor of history, and assistant dean in the School of Graduate Studies, Research and Continuing Education. My passion is continuing to provide access and opportunities for individuals who seek that for higher education. You're listening to voices that inspire.
